About PVC – Poly Vinyl Choride

Polyvinyl chloride, (PVC) commonly known as PVC, is a type of plastic widely used in construction materials, piping, and various consumer products, such as roller blind fabrics. While PVC itself is relatively stable, the manufacturing and disposal processes, as well as the additives used in PVC products, can lead to the release of harmful emissions.

Chlorine Gas Emission: During the production of PVC, chlorine gas is released. Inhalation of chlorine gas can irritate the respiratory system, leading to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Prolonged exposure may have more severe health effects, including damage to the lungs.

Dioxin Formation: The incineration of PVC, particularly at low combustion temperatures, can result in the formation of dioxins. Dioxins are highly toxic and persistent organic pollutants that can accumulate in the environment and in the fatty tissues of animals, including humans. Prolonged exposure to dioxins has been associated with a range of adverse health effects, including developmental and reproductive issues, immune system suppression, and cancer.

Phthalate Leaching: Phthalates, which are often used as plasticizers in PVC products to enhance flexibility, can leach out over time. Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have been linked to reproductive and developmental abnormalities, particularly in children.

Why PVC is Harmful to Humans:

Respiratory Issues: Inhalation of chlorine gas during production can lead to respiratory irritation.

Toxic Dioxin Exposure: Formation of dioxins during incineration poses a risk of serious health effects.

Endocrine Disruption: Phthalates leaching from PVC products may disrupt the endocrine system, affecting hormones and development.

Why One Would NOT Have PVC in Their Home, Surrounding Their Windows, Encapsulating their Living Space: Given the potential health risks associated with PVC, individuals may choose to avoid it in their homes to:

Safeguard Respiratory Health: Minimize exposure to chlorine gas during PVC production.

Prevent Toxic Emissions: Reduce the risk of dioxin formation during PVC incineration.

Limit Phthalate Exposure: Mitigate the potential for endocrine disruption by avoiding phthalate-containing PVC products.

Opting for alternative materials and products that do not contain PVC or choosing PVC-free options can contribute to a healthier indoor environment and minimize the potential risks associated with PVC emissions.

Blind Concepts, with our natural Latex Inks (water-based and extruded from natural latex), offer a range of PVC-free fabrics in block out and sunscreen.

White-backed, PVC free, solar reflectance roller blinds, with any colour or design to your internal living space.

About solar reflection and heat absorption.

White-Backed Roller Blind: A white-backed roller blind is designed with a reflective surface that effectively bounces off a significant portion of the incoming solar radiation. This high solar reflectance helps prevent heat from entering the room, keeping the interior cooler. Additionally, the reflective nature of white helps in maintaining a brighter and more naturally lit space.

Black-Coloured Roller Blind: In contrast, a black-coloured roller blind absorbs a greater amount of solar radiation, leading to increased heat absorption. This can result in a warmer interior as the blind retains and radiates heat. While black roller blinds may offer enhanced privacy, they tend to contribute to a warmer environment due to their lower solar reflectance.

In Summary

Solar Reflectance and Heat Absorption Comparison

                                           White-Backed | Black and dark-Colored

Solar Reflectance          | High              | Low

Heat Absorption           | Low               | High

“Solar Reflectance” indicates the ability of the roller blind to reflect solar radiation, with white-backed blinds having high reflectance and black-coloured blinds having low reflectance.

“Heat Absorption” represents the amount of solar energy absorbed, with white-backed blinds having low absorption and black-coloured blinds having high absorption.

Choosing a roller blind with a white backing isn’t just about enhancing aesthetic appeal; it’s a conscious decision that contributes to a cooler and more energy-efficient living space by effectively reflecting a substantial portion of the sun’s rays.
